Gilderoy Lockhart is a notable character in the Harry Potter series created by J.K. Rowling. Lockhart is a former wizard, author, and one of the Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers at Hogwarts. Lockhart is notorious for his extreme self-absorption and his tendency to exaggerate his own achievements. His autobiographies are bestsellers, but it soon becomes clear that he stole most of his exploits from other wizards and witches and then erased their memories. So his true ability turns out to be much less impressive than he makes it out to be. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Lockhart is taken to Hogwarts to erase the memory of Ron's sister Ginny. However, during their search for the Chamber of Secrets, Lockhart proves incompetent and ends up erasing his own memory. Despite his incompetence and the lack of respect he receives from the other characters, Gilderoy Lockhart remains a memorable character for his comedic arrogance and the way he parodies the typical trope of the arrogant celebrity in literature.
